The promenade between the old town and the riverwas made for cars back in the days, and after the construction of Rhein tunnel for the traffic flow, the City decided to make the area a walk way instead.

No wonder, the area has a lot to offer: mild breezes and spectacular sunsets, gastronomy with a view of the casemates, an outdoor staircase and also to the city beaches.

Kettwig was first mentioned in a document in the year 1000. It formerly belonged to the Werden Imperial Abbey. It was an independent city from 1857 before being a district of Essen since its incorporation in 1975. Kettwig's old town is a historic square with numerous half-timbered houses from the 17th to 19th centuries and winding streets. As a former independent clothmaking town, you can discover, besides the Weberbrunnen on the Tuchmacherplatz, twelve small bronze spindles.
